Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly beaten arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs to the signature of Congolese striker Fiston Mayele.
According to a report by Africafoot, the Brazilians have wrapped up a deal for the 30-year-old goal machine, who will leave Pyramids FC at the end of the 2024/25 season. It’s said the Betway Premiership champions have agreed to a €2.2 million (approximately R45 million) transfer fee and that Mayele will sign a three-year contract with the club.
The Congolese international, who notably scored against Sundowns in the CAF Champions League final, has netted 41 goals during his time in Egypt. Despite a quieter domestic campaign in 2024/25, with six goals and two assists, his overall output and big-match credentials appear to have convinced Sundowns of his pedigree, according to the foreign report.
This reported deal would then raise questions around the futures of Peter Shalulile and Lebo Mothiba — both of whom play in a similar mould to Mayele. Shalulile’s influence has dipped, while Mothiba is yet to make his mark since arriving in January.
Orlando Pirates were also linked to having an interest in Mayele recently.
Africafoot reported that Kaizer Chiefs and Saudi Arabian sides Al Riyadh, Al Kholood, and Al Khaleej had shown strong interest in Mayele too, but it now seems that Sundowns have landed a major coup in securing one of Africa’s most lethal marksman.
