Kaizer Chiefs striker Wandile Duba has broken his silence following a wave of criticism and disturbing threats from sections of the club’s fanbase, revealing that the abuse affected his mental state and led to him missing the team’s most recent match.
Speaking at the Nedbank multipurpose court handover at Phulong Secondary School in Springs, Duba addressed growing commentary around his playing style, particularly claims that he’s “too aggressive” for a striker. While he remained composed in his response, the 21-year-old admitted that the situation had taken a toll.
“No, no, no. It’s part of the job. You do well, they talk. You do bad, they talk. I just keep on focusing on what I do best and I don’t mind all the negative comments.”
When asked specifically about the criticism of his physical approach, Duba was clear that his style is intentional and aligned with the coach’s expectations.
“Does it affect you when people say you play aggressively? No, it doesn’t actually. It doesn’t because that’s how the coach wants us to be.”
However, the conversation took a darker turn as Duba revealed that some fans had crossed the line, sending death threats via social media, which ultimately impacted his readiness to play.
“It’s just the comments, people coming to your account, commenting threatening to kill you and all that. I don’t think on the last game I wasn’t on my right state of mind. So, I didn’t even go to go play.”
